Inbox Zero

Inbox Zero review and pricing: a free, open-source email app for Gmail and Outlook with optional AI sorting and drafts, with Superhuman as an alternative.

free tierWeb, Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android

Overview

Inbox Zero is a free email app for Gmail and Outlook, with paid AI that sorts your mail and drafts replies. The app runs on the web, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.

The AI labels every email, leaves a draft reply in your voice on mail that needs one, blocks cold email and bulk-unsubscribes from newsletters you never read. Higher plans add a meeting notetaker and Slack.

Its AI assistant, web and desktop apps are open source, and you can self-host them. We haven't used it for this page; it relies on Inbox Zero's pricing page, homepage, privacy policy and terms.

Best for

Gmail or Outlook users who get more email than they can answer and want a free client with optional AI drafts.

Skip it if

Skip it if you use an email provider other than Gmail or Outlook, or don't want email content sent to outside AI services.

Pros

  • Free email app. The mail app is free on web, desktop and iPhone; the AI is optional.
  • Drafts in your voice. Replies are pre-written from your email history and calendar.
  • Open source. The AI assistant, web and desktop apps are open source, and you can self-host them.
  • Inbox cleanup. Bulk unsubscribe, bulk archive and a cold email blocker are built in.

Cons

  • Email goes to outside AI. Its privacy policy says subject lines, body text and sender details may be shared with third-party AI services, which it bars from training on them.
  • Gmail and Outlook only. It connects Google and Microsoft email accounts, so other providers are left out.
  • Terms can change at once. Its terms say revisions take effect as soon as they're posted.

How it compares
