Pixelcut
Pixelcut review: an AI photo editor with a free background remover for product photos, with no watermark and no sign-up. A top Canva alternative for cutouts.
Overview
Pixelcut is an AI image editor for online sellers and content creators. Its best-known tool is the background remover. You upload a JPG, PNG or HEIC file, and the AI finds the subject and cuts it out in seconds. You can then refine edges with the Refine brush. Download a transparent PNG, switch to white, or pick a new backdrop. The editor also has Magic Eraser, an upscaler, Generative Fill, Expand Image and AI backgrounds, plus credit-based image and video models from partners. A batch tool removes backgrounds from many images at once and downloads them as a ZIP. There's a video background remover and a developer API. It runs in the browser and as iOS and Android apps. Where it falls down: batch editing only covers backgrounds and upscaling. We haven't run images through it; this page uses Pixelcut's own pages and help center.
Best for
An Etsy seller who needs a few product photos cut out on white this week, without paying. Also a creator making a transparent PNG for a thumbnail, or a small shop clearing a catalog in batches on Pro. Skip it if you need styled product scenes and shadows at volume; Photoroom does that better.
Skip it if
Skip it if you need batch edits beyond background removal and upscaling; Pixelcut's batch tool does only those two, and Photoroom handles fuller product-photo workflows.
Pricing
Free, $0. Limited background removal and upscaling, exports without a watermark. The help center says free users typically get 3 uses a day of limited tools. Pros
- Free web remover with no watermark and no sign-up. Pixelcut's background remover page says so directly, and exports stay watermark-free on Free.
- Refine brushes fix edges by hand. After the automatic cutout, brush back hair or trim stray background.
- One account works across web, iOS and Android. Start on your phone and finish on desktop.
- Batch removal handles whole catalogs. Pixelcut says one batch can take up to 10,000 images, with consistent sizing and padding, and downloads as a ZIP.
- A cheap API. Background removal costs 5 credits, so $10 covers 200 cutouts.
Cons
- Batch edits are narrow. Pixelcut's help center says batch editing only supports background editing and upscaling.
- Free has daily limits. The pricing page lists background removal as limited on Free, and the help center says free users typically get 3 uses a day. The remover page still calls it completely free.
- Projects follow your login method. Sign in another way, such as Apple instead of Google, and your projects seem to vanish. Pixelcut says this is the most common cause of missing projects.
- The name keeps changing. Pixelcut was renamed Pixa, then changed back in May 2026. Pixelcut says the Pixa name may still appear in places.
- Batch export caps. Pro allows 1,000 batch exports a month and Business 2,000, well below the 10,000-image batch size.
How it compares
Photoroom, our best pick for removing backgrounds, has no free plan. Its Pro plan is $7.50 a month billed yearly for 8,000 AI credits and 1,000 exports. It adds shadows, AI backgrounds and batch tools built for product catalogs. Pixelcut's web remover is free with no sign-up, and Pro is $10 billed monthly or $8 a month billed yearly. Canva, the runner-up, puts its background remover in Pro, at US$144 a year. It gives you templates, brand kits and resizing once the cutout is done. remove.bg is moving into Canva and closing, so it's no longer an option. Our call: pick Pixelcut for fast free cutouts. Pick Photoroom for product photos at scale, and Canva when the cutout goes straight into a designed post or ad.
Quick start
- Go to pixelcut.ai/background-remover, or open the Pixelcut app on iOS or Android.
- Click Upload image and pick a JPG, PNG or HEIC file. Try one product shot with clear edges first, like a mug on a kitchen counter.
- Wait while Pixelcut removes the background automatically.
- Use the Refine brush to fix any edges.
- Download a transparent PNG, or switch to a white or new background first.
- For a full catalog, drag several images into the web editor to batch remove backgrounds and download a ZIP.
Verdict
Pixelcut is our free pick for removing backgrounds; its web remover is free, with no watermark and no sign-up. That beats Canva, whose remover sits behind Pro, and remove.bg, which is closing. The catch is daily limits on Free, so heavy users will hit Pro at $8 a month billed yearly. Skip it if you need batch edits beyond cutouts and upscaling, or styled product scenes. Pick Photoroom for full product-photo editing at scale, and Canva if the cutout goes into a design.
